First of all, i want to note that today is Pokemon’s 16th birthday! Happy birthday, Pokemon!
I went digging in some old boxes and found my Pokemon Ruby
game from several years ago. The internal battery has died on it, but it still works fine otherwise. It has the entire Pokedex complete, legit. Those were some good times back then, trying to be the best, like no one ever was.
Catching them was my real test, training them was my cause.
Getting some of them actually took actual road trips to get to. I remember driving down with with my friend Michael on one trip to the NASA Space Station just to get Deoxys for me and some friends back in Dallas. None of us even knew Deoxys existed until we saw the news about the event. Kind of funny, because now everybody knows all of the Pokemon weeks before the game is even released.
We also searched the city to find a Pokemon Colosseum Bonus Disc just to get Jirachi and Michael got in a small car wreck along the way. Then there was my fun times with my friend Bekah to grab the “Top 21” and Celebi in an event in Arlington (and our Pikachu card contest). Bekah also provided me with an E-reader card she aquired from an event she went to and I was able to get the Lati@s and Lugia/Ho-Oh.
The final Pokemon on my list, Mew, was acquired with the help of some other friends of mine, Ruben and Samantha at the Mystery of Mew event in Houston. There, we were also introduced to and were able to get our own shiny Pokemon. We also conspired against a man in a wheelchair but that’s another story :x
Pokemon was more than just a game for me, it was an adventure. Nowadays, we have the Nintendo Network to easily gain access to any Pokemon from anybody in the world in seconds without even leaving the house. I know there’s almost double the amount of Pokemon now to worry about, but I still sort of wish we only had the old methods of trading to work with. Pokemon brought a lot of people together in a different way than it does now, and I definitely won’t forget those times :)
